In my opinion, the best way to protect your self from the flu is to keep yourself healthy and naturally boosting your immune system.
I have never had the flu shot and have been fortunate in that I haven’t had the flu in 9 years. My father-in-law on the other hand has been forced by his employer to have the flu shot every year and every year, without fail, he gets the flu twice. Once right after he gets the shot and some other time during the flu season.
While I’m not advocating for or against the flu shot, I do believe if my father-in-law reinforced his immune system, his track record would be healthier, with or without it.
Here are my tips to boosting your immune system.
1. Get More Sleep – Sleep is when your body recovers from the various stresses you put it through during the day. If you don’t give it enough sleep you are essentially running on a deficit which lowers your immune system and makes you more susceptible to getting sick. Get at least 8 hours a night and try to get to bed by 10 and not be up before 6am.
2. Work Out – Doing something active everyday is a very important aspect to staying healthy. Exercise boosts your immune system and is a mild detox for the body. It doesn’t have to be an intense workout in the gym. It can be something as simple as a bike ride or a walk in the park.
3. Work In – Doing stuff that brings energy into your body is very beneficial. Activities like Hatha Yoga, or Tai Chi or Qigong. All of these are a form of meditation, which helps you de-stress. Working “in” is essentially detoxing the mind. Stress weakens the immune system. De-stress and you boost your immune system
4. Eat Organic Food – the bottom line is that organic food is more nutritionally dense, providing you with more vitamins and minerals to help boost your immune system.
5. Drink More Water – Not only is water a great detox, it is essential to keeping vital organs working properly. A good guideline is to take your bodyweight in kg (divide bodyweight by 2.2 if your scale is in lbs) and multiply by 0.033. That number is how much water you need in litres. Let’s take a 200 lb man as an example. 200 divided by 2.2 = 90.1 kg. 90.1kg x .033 = 2.97 L. So a 200 lbs man needs just under 3 litres of water a day.
